Education in England is changing fast. The national curriculum is under review. More than half of secondary schools are either academies, or are applying for academy status – and primary schools are starting to catch up. The Free School Movement is gathering momentum. Those schools are being given greater autonomy – but they are also being judged on their performance.
Delegates will have opportunities to:
- See and hear case studies from schools which have used global learning across their own curriculum – with input from head teachers, class teachers and students.
- Consider how global learning can help a school meet its obligations for spiritual, moral, social and culture (SMSC) learning.
- Hear from global learning practitioners – such as Development Education Centres and International NGOs – about how they work with schools in the new education environment.
- Share updates on the latest thinking from government and DfID’s proposed Global Learning Programme England.
- Debate what should be in a ‘global thinking framework’ for schools.

Inspiring examples from schools and academies
We will hear from teachers and pupils from flagship global learning schools – such as Howe Dell Community School in Hertfordshire and Winterbourne Academy in Bristol – on how they are using global learning in their schools to raise standards.
Inspiring examples from global learning practitioners
We will explore how practitioners in global learning are helping schools and teachers to use global learning to raise standards. We’ll hear about the latest research from the Institute of Education’s Development Education Research Centre, about the Global Teacher Award and about innovative projects at Development Education Centres.
Expert panel Question Time
A panel of experts from Think Global, the Institute of Education, the Department for International Development and Ofsted* will debate the opportunities and challenges for global learning – with plenty of opportunity for questions and contributions from delegates.
Global Thinking Framework for Schools
We will discuss what should be contained in a global thinking framework for schools – to help as many schools as possible to adopt best practice for global learning.
Plus: ◊ best practice stalls, ◊ sharing funding ideas, ◊ opportunities to network, ◊ and updates on the Global Learning Programme England.
