The Geographical Association (GA) is an independent subject association with the core charitable object of furthering geographical knowledge and understanding through education. Its Manifesto: A Different View is an important reference document for the organization as it sets out a number of key principles for geographical education. The GA’s main activity areas include:

  • Leadership in geography education. The GA campaigns for geography by engaging with policy makers and government ministers. It also develops geography subject leadership at all levels, from new teachers during their initial training, to geography consultations in primary schools, to secondary heads of departments in 11-16 schools and in post education.
  • Support and guidance. The GA publishes key geography resources for teachers from Early Years through to Post-16. In addition, three professional journals are published on a termly basis – Primary Geography, Teaching Geography and Geography. These plus many other resources are accessible via the website www.geography.org.uk. The GA runs an extensive programme of face-to-face CPD events as well as online CDP activities.
  • Membership and community engagement. The GA’s membership includes primary and secondary teachers, teachers educators, academics, geography students, infant, primary and secondary schools, colleges, universities, activities, academies, libraries, societies, museums and businesses.
