The British Red Cross Humanitarian Strategy: Humanitarian Education, or the structured learning experiences that promote the fundamental principles of humanity and the underlying humanitarian values, skills, attitudes and behaviours, is a fundamental component of Red Cross work. The aim of Humanitarian Education is to develop responsible citizens prepared to promote and protect the basic humanitarian principles of respect for life and human dignity in personal, local and global relationships, in peace and in times of conflict.

Humanitarian Education and Development Education: Humanitarian education focuses on two core areas of the Red Cross movement’s work, which contribute directly to corresponding development education themes:

  • Conflict (conflict, citizenship, social justice, values/perceptions, human rights, interdependence)
  • Disasters and Emergencies (citizenship, social justice, human rights, interdependence, values/perceptions, sustainable development)

Developing an approach to Development Education is an important part of the BRCS humanitarian education strategy.
